Chocolate Mousse

This recipe features the badly-kept secret healthy ingredient for a decadent, velvety dessert: the humble avocado. Ooh, I’m going all Nigella on you.

My boyfriend has commented that my previous attempts to make guilt-free puddings have tasted “too healthy”, and as we are both self-confessed chocolate fiends I wanted to create a rich, indulgent mousse that would give Gu a run for their money.

Serves 2


2 small-medium avocados

2-3 tbsps raw cacao / cocoa powder (raw cacao has higher nutritional value but I know it’s not always easy to come by!)

3 tbsps Whole Earth peanut butter

4 tbsps runny honey

1/2 tbsp coconut oil

Slice the avocados and spoon out the flesh into a bowl. Mash them up with a fork and then add the cacao powder, peanut butter, honey and coconut oil. I like to mix the ingredients first with a spoon as this brings the mousse together and is kinder to your blender if it can’t handle solids very well! Make sure all of the powder is folded into the avocado mousse.

Add the mixture to your blender/food processor with a dash of almond milk or water to loosen, then blend on a low speed for 1-2 minutes until creamy and smooth. Add more honey/chocolate/PB if desired.

You can eat this straightaway or keep in the fridge for a few hours to set. Serve with fresh berries or devour on its own – it has a rich, intense taste but doesn’t leave you feeling sick or bloated.
